DST CONTROL is attending the 20th ESA Symposium on European Rocket & Balloon Programmes and related research (PAC 2011) in Hyères, France between May 24 and May 26. We will present the technology behind the PoGo Lite balloon based space telescope and we will be available for other questions related to gyro stabilised gimbals in general.
2011-05-23
The Swedish newspaper Corren recently published an article (in Swedish) about our most super-sized gyro stabilised gimbal so far. While our most light weight gimbal starts at 1 kg mass, the PoGo Lite gimbal will take off at a mass of 2 000 kg! The delicate payload is a telescope for gamma ray observations and the instrument alone weighs approximately 700 kg.
DST CONTROL was contracted in 2009 to design and manufacture the gimbal and the pointing system. The gimbal is based on the same unique direct drive motor design we use in all our gimbals. The only difference is that the motors of the Pogo Lite system are 100 times more powerful than the motors used in our smallest OTUS range. In Pogo we also use the very same unique inertial sensors as we use in our top range OTUS family. By means of this technology we achieve an absolute pointing accuracy of 0.05 degrees and de-stability better than 30 µrad (RMS).
The purpose of the Swedish PoGo Lite project, led by the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), is to collect polarization data from so called pulsars; a very special type of super nova. More specifically PoGo will focus on the Crab Nebula which was observed to have exploded by the Chinese in the year 1054. A gigantic stratospheric balloon will carry this special observatory to an altitude of 40 km. At this altitude the gamma ray attenuation of the atmosphere is small enough to get scientifically relevant data.
The use of stratospheric balloons to carry heavy scientific equipment is very cost efficient compared to other technologies. Not only is the balloon itself low cost compared to other carriers. The gondola can also be reused since it will be recovered after its journey in the upper layers of the atmosphere. The whole system will be launched in June 2011 from the Esrange Rocket and Balloon Service site operated by Swedish Space Corporation (Rymdbolaget). The PoGo system will remain floating for 10-17 days and will make a circumpolar journey while gathering scientific data over Greenland, Canada and Siberia.
